The Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) - McMinnville and Motlow’s McMinnville campus have a strong partnership that seeks to improve the quality of life through educational benefits across the service area. For example, TCAT - McMinnville and Motlow McMinnville have collaborated to host Career Awareness Day and Educator In-Service events over the past two years.
Career Awareness Day is an event for all eighth graders in Warren County to expose them to all the opportunities and advantages of continuing their education in a technical career path. Educator In-Service serves to make our secondary educators in surrounding communities aware of the opportunities available at both TCAT and Motlow so they can promote and steer students toward those at their respective schools.
Not only do the two institutions academically support each other but they also physically support each other by sharing equipment and skills, such as the two Motlow storage buildings constructed by TCAT’s Building Construction Technology program.
Some exciting news for TCAT – McMinnville came from the last legislative session. Governor Lee’s 2023-2024 Fiscal Year Budget designates roughly one billion dollars for the support and maintenance of TCAT schools and community colleges across the state. This significant increase in support of TCATs across the state is a strong indicator of how our state views the need to augment and implement both existing and new programs in the area of Career Technical Education (CTE).
TCAT - McMinnville has been allocated approximately $71 million dollars. They will replace the existing facility with $46 million dollars. They are also building a new facility in Coffee County that will use the remaining $25 million. The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) is in the design phase with tentative plans to begin construction in 2024.
These funds allow for bigger and better equipment and the expansion of space for the programs. The square footage will increase to meet the new standards, allowing for the tearing down of the old McMinnville facility and construction of a new, modern and highly equipped “state of the art” TCAT. All programs will have upgraded facilities.
Under the leadership of Dr. Melody Edmonds, TCAT - McMinnville continues to grow in the existing programs as well as adding new programs that are needed across its service area. The Building Construction Technology program was approved by the state as a BC-A/R Class Provider, meaning the students can apply for a limited contractor license up to $125,000. Part of a statewide TBR initiative at the state level allows students who are completing a degree in industrial maintenance at TCAT to receive full freshman credit in Motlow’s Mechatronics program. Because TCAT – McMinnville prioritizes outreach to veterans and supplies the services necessary to support veterans while they pursue their education, they also received VETS campus status.
Strong leadership and a staff of skilled instructors resulted in a completion rate of 88 percent, a job placement rate of 89 percent, and a licensure rate of 100 percent in 2022. During this past academic year, TCAT - McMinnville achieved Council on Occupational Education reaffirmation. Reaffirmation ensures quality education, credit transfer to similar accredited institutions, along with state and federal funding for institutions. It is vital for an institution to achieve this status. The programs of study currently available through TCAT include:
