Some 30 million young Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 are theoretically available for military service, but fewer than 1 million are fit and eager enough to volunteer.Being physically “fit enough” means new recruits can meet the military’s health standards and pass a physical fitness test. Unfortunately, about one-third of all potential military recruits are too fat and out of shape.
