Letter to the editor - "This, we'll defend"
Letter to Editor

From William A. Hughes

As I sit here trying to make some sense of one the most heartless and despicable actions of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of my country, it almost causes me to ask God Almighty to remove this blight from the face of the earth.

The very thought that a commander would put a golf game above the return of the remains of an American hero is beyond comprehension. I cannot fathom the hurt and grief of the affected families, but what would you expect from someone who dodged his chance of service because of a "heel spur"? This was an act of total disrespect and denigration that each and every man and woman who serves should never forget.

This was not the actions of an honorable man, much less the president of my country, that I, as a veteran, can ever forgive or forget. If the country can survive this disastrous period in our history, it will only be by the grace of God Almighty from whom all blessings are bestowed. I close this with this quotation from Franklin D. Roosevelt, "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little."

May God continue to bless the U.S.A. My sworn oath to this country was "This we'll defend."
