Battling for medals

No WCHS wrestler will be bringing home a state title this season, but all six local athletes survived a brutal first day of battles in the TSSAA state tournament at Williamson County Ag Expo Arena.

Jakoby Odineal, Burgess Galligan, Jaylan Clayton, Zerek Keel, Xavier Simmons and Marley Harris all took their first loss Friday, but by the end of the day, each WCHS athlete had done enough to stay alive in the consolation bracket and be in contention for the state podium Saturday (final results were unavailable at press time).

Odineal, Clayton and Keel were all successful in their first matches at the state tournament, earning their way into the championship quarterfinals before falling into the consolation bracket.

On the other side, Galligan, Simmons and Harris were all put to the test early after losing their opening bouts. Each was faced with elimination when they stepped onto the mat for a second time Friday and none were ready to go home as Harris and Simmons both got pins and Galligan recorded a 14-0 major decision to make it to Saturday.

All six needed to win two matches Saturday to make it to the podium. See Wednesday's paper and the Standard website for more info.
