Three nights after suffering its worst loss of the season, the Boyd girls team just wanted to take out its frustration on somebody. The Whitwell Lady Tigers just happened to be the team that walked into a Lady Bronco stampede.
Boyd smashed Whitwell 59-26 at home, moving its record to 8-7 overall this season and picking up its third victory against a TSSAA opponent along the way.
"Extremely proud of the way the girls executed the game plan tonight," said coach Tim Page following the game. "Defensively, I think we set the tone with our aggression and press, then worked to establish a paint presence on offense.
"Once we showed we could score on the block or get in close, their defense packed in and we connected from outside. It was a great team win."
Freshman Brooke Kesey got back on track after being held scoreless from the field in Tuesday's 59-12 loss to Cannon County. Boyd's top scorer bounced back with 20 points against the Lady Tigers, turning the paint into her home and showing off her speed and length atop the Lady Bronco press.
Senior Krista Chisam had her best shooting night, igniting in the second half to turn a 28-10 lead at halftime into a mercy-rule victory late. Chisam drained four 3-pointers in the second half on her way to a season-best 12 points.
Shelby Miller and Katie Bechtel drained back-to-back 3-pointers at one point in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of open looks in opposite corners as Boyd shared the ball well on the offensive end.
"We played great complimentary basketball. Defense fueled the offense. Guards fed the post. Attention to the post left our shooters open. We put the game plan together Thursday and the girls paid attention to every detail and executed it," said Page.
Junior Regin Grissom also had her best night since being inserted into the lineup this week following an injury to Paige Sweeten, the team's senior PG (and Grissom's sister). Grissom finished with nine points and flashed an array of nifty finishes in the paint.
Boyd will jump back into TSIAA battles Monday when it travels to face Franklin Road Christian. It will be a battle for first place in the TSIAA South Division as the Lady Minutemen are 6-0 in TSIAA games and the Lady Broncos are 5-0. Action is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
