The WCMS football team may not have been playing in the CTC championship game Thursday in Shelbyville, but the Pioneers were still represented at the event. Four Pioneers were honored for their standout seasons this year as they claimed All Central Tennessee Conference honors.
Eighth graders Huck Damon, Daylen Savage, Nathan Luviano and AJ Whitman were all on hand to receive awards after helping the Pioneers to four wins, the most the program has put up under fifth-year coach Ben Matheney.
"I'm very happy for our guys. It's big to be honored by your conference and they were all very deserving," said Matheney, who has guided the program through two tough years without wins to a CTC playoff team in 2023. "It's big for our program too. These are kids who have spent years with us developing and it shows that the work it worth it."
All four were two-way forces on the Pioneers and showed up big in big games. Whitman and Savage fueled a 2-0 start, while Damon's season-high 175 yards against Franklin North helped seal a playoff bid. Luviano, voted a team captain by his peers, was in the trenches the whole time opening up holes for his teammates.
"AJ and Daylen are guys who can score anytime they have the ball. They got their hands on the ball on both sides of the ball too; they're playmakers and create chaos," said Matheney. "Huck really came on strong at the end of the season and was one of the hardest guys to tackle in our conference. And he was running behind Nathan, who was a big part of our offensive line.
"I'm sure he would've wanted to share that award with all the guys in the trenches. He has the respect of our entire team."
Warren County finished the year 4-4 with wins over Grundy County, Coffee County, Lewisburg and Franklin North.
