The Southern Standard wants to take the opportunity to highlight the standout local athletes. Partnering with R3 Logistics and Mud Bums Family Sports Grill, we will be honoring a Pioneer of the Week throughout the 2022-23 school year. Our honoree from March 26 – April 1 is WCHS soccer player Caleb Hines.
It doesn’t take Ted Lasso’s keen sense of soccer to recognize the changes between last year’s Pioneers and the current version that is coming off two dominant victories on the pitch last week. Warren County struggled to score while winning just two games in 2022, but the Pioneers have a star in the making in their lineup this year.
Caleb Hines, who cut his teeth as a star for the Covenant Lions the last few years, has made an instant impact since enrolling at Warren County and making the Pioneer roster. He has five goals in five games for Warren County, helping the squad pile up more wins this year (3-2) than all of last season.
Hines was particularly impressive in the wins over Cannon County (9-0) and Sewanee (4-0) last week. He had four goals and two assists, including securing a hat trick against the Lions on the road before halftime.
Warren County coach August Palombo welcomes Hines with open arms once he showed up at tryouts after last season. He’s noticed the instant spark the splendid scorer has provided this season.
“Caleb brought with him the type of leadership that helps strengthen bonds on and off the field. Having a high schooler with his level of self-discipline and positive influence is something most high school coaches would dream of,” said Palombo. “His nose for the goal and willingness to set up others for opportunities is incredible.”
All that is left for Hines is to keep his scoring rolling when Warren County starts district play this week. His scoring has a been a barometer for success all year (He has scored all his goals in wins over Tullahoma, Cannon County and Sewanee) and it could be the difference in the game Tuesday against Coffee County. It will be the District 6-4A opener for the Pioneers and it will be at home.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
