Taming the Columbia Lady Lions has become an easy chore for the Lady Pioneers. Warren County completed a sweep of its district rival Friday, going on the road and claiming a 36-21 victory as it stays in the hunt for the No. 3 spot in the standings.
Trinity Reynolds finished with 11 points and Brinlee Griffith added eight as Warren County led wire-to-wire in its third district victory. The win, coupled with a Shelbyville (2-2) loss earlier in the week at Lincoln County, vaulted the Lady Pioneers back into third place in the standings at 3-2 in District 9-4A play. With the win, Warren County also topped its win total from last year, moving to 6-14 overall in the first season under Kyle Turnham.
Things weren’t easy for the Lady Pioneers early. Neither team scored for over four minutes, but once Reynolds broke the seal with a step-through floater, Warren County was off to the races.
Zoie Verge and Addison Steakley added breakaway layups and Reynolds nailed a corner 3-pointer during a 9-0 run in a minute, one that would keep the Lady Pioneers ahead for good on the road.
Ruby Denning played a big part in Warren County staying in control, scoring a season-best six points as she provided a hub in the paint for the Lady Pioneers to go through when they needed buckets.
Griffith ended up sealing the game late, breaking a four-minute scoreless streak for her team in the fourth quarter with two free throws to push her team’s lead back up to 28-18. She added a late layup for good measure as Warren County ended a two-game slid in district games.
The Lady Pioneers will be looking for revenge Monday when they take on DeKalb County at home. The Tigers topped Warren County 40-37 back in December, but the Lady Pioneers can build some momentum with a win in the 6 p.m. matchup at Charlie Dalton Gym this week.
