Warren County will make a few adjustments on offense when the Pioneers travel to Sparta on Friday night to face White County.
Pioneer coach Matt Turner says he expects Braylon Grayson to see more time at wingback, a position where he can play more of a role in the passing game. Turner says there will also be a focus on getting the ball outside to wide receivers when the coverage dictates it.
Dawson Haley and P.J. Truax are among players who could see more action at tailback if Grayson shifts more to the wing.
Warren County (0-1) was effective running the football last Friday night in Smithville as the Pioneers piled up 241 yards and rushed for 5 TDs. As a result, DeKalb County often put 10 guys around the line of scrimmage to stop the run and left Warren County’s wide receiver in 1-on-1 coverage.
Coach Turner said the Pioneers are looking to take advantage of those situations with quick slants and downfield passes if they arise this week against White County.
“We have guys who have shown they can go up, high point the ball, and make plays,” said Turner. “We’ve worked on communicating plays better at the line of scrimmage when we see certain things.”
After watching game film, Turner said he thinks conditioning may have played a role during the fourth quarter against DeKalb County. The Pioneers let the Tigers score the final 15 points to win 35-34. Warren County had a back-breaking 3-and-out on offense when the Pioneers were up 34-27 with 6 minutes left.
“With it being the first time we had played four quarters, I think we got a little tired with our steps because we called some good plays,” said Turner.
White County (1-0) earned a resounding 48-0 win over Livingston Academy in its opener last week. The Warriors were up 34-0 at the half.
White County is touting RB Malaki Dowell as a Mr. Football candidate and MaxPreps lists him as rushing for 189 yards and 4 TDs in the opener.
