Warren County High School baseball’s early April struggles continued to prevail Tuesday night in McMinnville. Welcoming Shelbyville, the Pioneers were held to a single run on the way to an 11-1, six-inning loss to the Eagles.

The result was Warren County’s sixth loss since the calendar turned to April and put the team at 1-6 to start the new month.

“(Pitcher Evan Snapp) goes out there and gives us a really good chance to win a game. He pitched really well, I’m super proud of him,” Warren County coach Phillp King said. “We lose a few balls in the sky. We didn’t really compete all that well at the plate, so we didn’t do anything offensively to help him out.”

Trailing by one after the first inning, the Pioneers gave up an additional three runs in the top of the third, including two coming via a Shelbyville home run with two outs. The Eagles continued to push ahead by adding another run in the top of the fourth inning and four more in the top of the fifth to put Warren County in a 9-0 hole.

Still looking for a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, Warren County was able to get on the board thanks to a ground ball to shortstop from Jaytton Baker that led to Hayven Jones coming home on an error at second base.

Shelbyville went on to answer in the top of the sixth with two more runs, before preventing Warren County from scoring in the bottom of the inning to bring the game to an earlier close.

“We’ve gotta make our own breaks. It seems like there’s a lot of things that go against us. We’ve not played very well lately. There’s spurts where you win a few games, you lose a few games, it’s just a matter of figuring it out,” King said. “The kids play hard, they’ve got a lot of pride. It’s just a matter of putting all the pieces together.”

Corban Felton was credited with the Pioneers’ only hit of the game.

On the mound, Snapp pitched into the fifth inning and came off with eight strikeouts, nine hits, nine runs and four walks. Keaton Rowe relieved Snapp in the fifth and closed the game out with one strikeout, as well as an additional four hits and two runs, over its remainder.
