Starting a winning streak

Coach Lou Brown has a famous line in 'Major League.' When trying to rally his squad, he tells the team, "we won a game yesterday. If we win one today, that's two in a row. Win another tomorrow and that's called a winning streak. It was happened before."

The Pioneers have now put two wins in a row together. This week, they'll get a chance to keep their winning streak alive.

Warren County took down Franklin County at home Friday, running by the visiting Rebels 64-47. It was sweet revenge for the Pioneers after they dropped a 49-48 heartbreaker against the same squad last month.

Sophomore Devin Fish and senior Treyton Terry again did the heavy lifting offensively, scoring 16 points apiece as the nearly had their most lopsided win of the season (Warren County beat Sparta 62-43 at home earlier this year). It was far from a two-man show for the Pioneers though; The whole roster got into the action as Warren County has now moved to 4-6 this season.

Dylan Stepp and Nate Turner each hit big 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Pioneers built a 31-24 halftime lead, while Alex van Vuuren was the long-range sniper Warren County needed in the second half.

Saddled with early foul trouble, the Pioneer senior forward had to watch most of the second quarter, but van Vuuren needed no time to get into a groove when he was back on the court in the second half. He drilled back-to-back triples from the left key to make it 41-28 Warren County midway through the third quarter, then he tested his hot hand again later and found the aim was true for a third time on the left side. His third long-distance connection, sank as the Pioneer student section went wild and van Vuuren roared near midcourt, gave Warren County a 46-32 advantage.

Fish took over the next 30 seconds. The sophomore looked poised and confident when the Rebels tried to extend their defense to full court, easily working his way into a 12-footer in front of the rim for an easy bucket. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Fish flew in defensively and ripped the ball away from a Franklin County player before setting his sights on the rim.

Fish was unable to finish a contorting layup through contact, but knocking down a pair of free throws to cap a four-point barrage in 15 seconds got a packed crowd on its feet.

Extra effort was what coach Fish wanted from his team during a 2-6 start and the Pioneers found a new gear last week.

Aaron Templeton was a relentless attacker of the rim and a persistent pest on the ball against the Rebels, sophomore post Chance Whitlock imposed his will on the, including on one possession where he was stopped initially but he split two players trying to box him out for a putback, and an army of athletic and young Pioneer wings kept Franklin County frustrated all night.

Warren County will get a chance to establish a winning streak Monday when it takes on Cannon County at home. It will be the second meeting with the Lions as the Pioneers escaped Woodbury with a 54-51 win on Dec. 1 thanks to a buzzer-beating triple by sophomore Keyton Reno.

Monday's action at Charlie Dalton Gym is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
