Danny Fish probably stopped getting tax bills in DeKalb County when he crossed the border to become the coach of the Pioneers in 2021, but he may need to expect some mail soon. It seems the Pioneers, with Fish at the helm, still own the Tigers.
Warren County defeated DeKalb County 60-44 Friday, notching its 17th win in the last 19 matchups with its bitter border rival. A trio of juniors led the way for the Pioneers as Deashawn Adams and Devin Fish scored 15 points while Keyton Reno added 14.
Tension is expected anytime the Tigers and Pioneers square off on the hardwood, with Fish's move to Warren County after leading the Lady Tigers for a decade only adding fuel to the fire three years ago. There wasn't much drama in Friday's matchup though - the Pioneers thoroughly dominated to move to 4-2 this season and pick up their third road win.
Warren County was locked in from the opening tip, using a lob play to Reno to get on the board in the first 10 seconds. By the time Adams sliced for a layup just 39 seconds into the game to make it 4-0, DeKalb County was already asking for timeout. It didn't do much good.
The Pioneers kept pouring it on in the first quarter, getting a corner 3-pointer from Corban Felton and a deep triple from Fish from the right wing to take their first double-digit lead, 14-3, with 3:36 to go in the first. The advantage would rarely slip below 10 points the rest of the way.
Adams did a ton of his damage in the first quarter, scoring nine quick points as the Pioneers built a 21-9 cushion.
Nate Turner, who finished with eight points, started to heat up in the second quarter. He hit one of five first-half 3-pointers for Warren County early in the period, keeping Warren County out front comfortably. The Pioneers would ultimately go to the break ahead 35-20.
Any thoughts of a second-half comeback for the home team were quickly erased early in the third. Adams, Fish and Reno took command of the paint, scoring over, through and around Tiger defenders as the lead continued to grow. By the time Fish got his late bucket late in the fourth, Warren County had surged ahead 58-37.
The last two points for the Pioneers were put in by Luke Simpson, who got his first extensive run with the varsity team and sank a pair of free throws in the waning seconds.
With its impressive showing Friday, Warren County was able to finish a three-game stretch of road matchups over the last two weeks 2-1 (the Pioneers won at Stewarts Creek Tuesday). The momentum will carry right into a return to Charlie Dalton Gym Tuesday as the Pioneers will face off with Siegel at 7:30 p.m.
WC scoring - Adams 15, Fish 15, Reno 14, Turner 8, Felton 3, Simpson 2, Isaiah Robledo 2, Chance Whitlock 1
