The Warren County High School boys’ soccer team was back on its home pitch for a district match with Shelbyville Tuesday evening. Trailing by one goal early on, the Pioneers fell further behind late in the second half on the way to a 4-0 loss to the Eagles.

“We knew (Shelbyville) was a strong school. We were trying to play a defensive side, but as you can see, they were able to break on our sides,” Warren County coach Alex Cordova said. “We were doing good decisions with the ball, until we had that mistake and got a red card and were playing a man down, so other than that, I think we did a pretty good game.”

Shelbyville got it going within the first five minutes of the match, scoring at the 35:21 mark of the first half. The Pioneers were able to keep the Eagles from adding to their lead through the remainder of the half and went into halftime trailing 1-0.

Warren County was able to keep the deficit tight as the second half got under way, remaining down by a goal through the half’s first 20 minutes. That deficit expanded into a 2-0 hole for the Pioneers following a Shelbyville goal with 18:28 left in regulation.

Warren County continued to fall further behind from there over the game’s remainder, starting with a third goal for the Eagles with 13:42 left to play and then another with 11:02 left on the clock, respectively.

“We now know where to start working on, what spots we need to work on and what we have to do with the boys,” Cordova said of bouncing back and learning from the district loss.

The loss dropped the Pioneers to 4-1-1 on the season.

A day after an 11-1 home loss to Shelbyville Central, Warren County baseball once again ran into problems Wednesday evening. Taking on the Eagles in Shelbyville this time around, the Pioneers were held scoreless on the way to a 15-0 loss.

The game came to a close after 4.5 innings, due in part to an 11-run bottom of the fourth inning that helped Shelbyville ultimately seal the win.

Warren County was held to three hits, with one each for Tyler Adams, Ryder Gilispie and Woogs Bryan.

Lealon Arnold pitched the first three innings and finished with seven hits, four runs and one walk. Gilispie got it started in the bottom of the fourth inning, adding one hit, four runs and two walks before getting pulled. Up next was Hayven Jones, who had one strikeout, three runs and two walks before coming off. Jaytton Baker followed and surrendered three hits, four runs and one walk during his time on the mound. Warren County continued with Brady Swallows, who gave up one hit and an additional two walks. Keaton Rowe was next up, striking out one to bring the bottom of the fourth to a close.

WCMS softball battles back

The Warren County Middle School softball team ran into some trouble early against Coffee County, but a five-run bottom of the sixth inning was ultimately the difference-maker on the way to an 8-7 home victory Wednesday night.

The Lady Pioneers finished the game with 13 hits, led by June Cossit with three. Reese Reintiz, Charley Wilson, Aven King and Maddie Bryant all followed with two each. Christy Farmer and Zara Laxson both had one hit.

Reinitz was credited with three of the team’s seven RBI, just ahead of Laxson with two. Cossit and Wilson both had one RBI each.

Wilson went the distance in the circle, finishing with 13 strikeouts, 11 hits, seven runs and one walk across seven innings.
