WCMS Lady Pioneer Sarai Ruiz didnt let losing a shoe slow her down. Ruiz keeps on the attack during the 7-0 season-opening win versus DeKalb County.

Warren County Middle School kicked off its Lady Pioneer soccer season with a home varsity match versus the DeKalb County Middle School Lady Saints on Thursday evening.
The Lady Pioneers picked a good way to begin the year with a 7-0 win.
WCMS coach Matt Walker said, “We are blessed with speed and some tremendous athletes who are still learning to play together but should lead to an exciting season. We play each game to get better and prepare for the year-end conference tournaments and I think we did what we needed to do tonight to walk away healthy and get the win.”
Both Warren and DeKalb started out slow with both teams feeling the other out. Just five minutes into the contest, Savannah Cox beat her defender down the right side and took a hard shot past the DeKalb keeper into the top corner of the goal to get WCMS off to a quick 1-0 start.
Moments later, on an errant pass by a DeKalb County midfielder, Samantha Ramsey intercepted a pass and played the ball forward to Makenna Mason who easily beat the Lady Saints goalie to give WCMS a 2-0 advantage.
After some back-and-forth action near the DeKalb goal, a handball by a defender gave the Lady Pioneers a penalty shot front and center of the WCMS goal but it was just high over the goal.
Seconds later, Mason again broke free, this time on the left side, and received a perfect pass from Katie Toney for her second goal. WCMS took a commanding 3-0 lead.
Toney began to look for a goal of her own, and she attacked the heart of the defense and went right at three DeKalb defenders and put a shot into the back of the net from 12 feet out and went up 4-0 with just minutes to play until the half.
The Lady Pioneers dominated the first half and were not finished. Just before the halftime whistle, Cox found Macie Powers as she streaked down toward the far post and Powers put it away for a 5-0 WCMS advantage at the half.
Opting to get the young girls some much-needed game experience, coach Walker deployed the JV team to start the second half. After 20 minutes and lots of back-and-forth play, Powers hit Toney in the middle and she quickly beat two defenders and drilled her second goal of the game to go up 6-0.
As the game wound down, Toney completed her hat trick off a through ball by Ramsey giving the Lady Pioneers a 7-0 lead just moments before the final whistle.
Coach Walker said, “DeKalb is a young team that is coached very well. They were just unable to stifle the explosive attack and that was the biggest difference in the game.”
The Lady Pioneers will take the field Monday evening against Franklin South with game time set for 5 p.m.
