Fall is the right time for chili and The Historic Black House is offering various versions of the spicy stew on Oct. 8.

“Our Board of Directors will be making several different varieties of chili,” said Jeanette Lowery, executive director of The Black House. “People can savor the different chili flavors. We will have six, including bean-less chili, mild chili, spicy chili and vegan chili.”

The fundraiser kicks off at 11:30 a.m. that Saturday and continues until the last bowl of chili is served. Meals include cornbread, crackers, drink and McDonald’s Apple Pie. Cost is $10. Also available will be a hot dog, drink and apple pie for $7.

The Historic Black House, constructed in 1825 by Jesse Coffee, is the oldest remaining house in McMinnville. It is on the corner of West Main and High streets. The house was deeded to the Eagle Club in 1984, with executive director Jeanette Lowery supervising its restoration and maintenance since that time. The Black House derives its name from previous owner Dr. Thomas Black (1837-1904).

Black was a Confederate surgeon. He purchased the home in the days after the War Between the States and maintained his clinic and office there. His granddaughter, Jean Leonard, deeded the house and contents to the Eagle Fund for restoration in 1984.

The house has been partially restored and includes many period furnishings throughout the home. Fundraisers are conducted annually by Board of Directors members and executive director Lowery to continue the restoration effort.

Live music will be offered at the gazebo.

Generous sponsorship makes this event possible. They include McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, KFC, Dr Pepper Bottling Company of McMinnville, Signs by Genia, Womack Printing Company and The Black House Board members.
