'Hee Haw' flavor comes to Park

An American TV variety show featuring country music and humor in fictional Kornfield Kounty will come to life at Park Theater this weekend.

Hee Haw Warren County Style is set for Saturday, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. Presented by Caring Hearts United of McMinnville, the event will feature local talent performing songs and telling jokes.

“We had some good laughs Monday night during practice from members of the cast so we’re thinking if our own cast will laugh that hard the audience will too,” said Caring Hearts United founder Dianne Sneed. “I’ve always said laughter makes you feel good so I think we’ll have a lot of people feeling good as they’re leaving the theater.”

Volunteers have designed several different props to add to the show and tweaked the routine to replace some jokes that weren’t generating huge laughs.

“We are super excited about this,” said Caring Hearts United volunteer Alma Shoemaker. “It will be locals performing songs and comedy skits. Most of us aren’t professionals, but it will be entertaining.”

Shoemaker described Warren County’s version of the show as “live entertainment” and “not karaoke.”

The cast will include Jonathan and Shelly Womack and their daughter Chalee.

“Chalee will be performing as Dottie West,” said Jonathan. “We were originally asked to do June Carter and Johnny Cash. We were then asked to do Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. We are working on those routines. It will be songs and comedy skits. Anything we can do to help Caring Hearts United, we will. It’s a wonderful organization.”

“Hee Haw” first aired on June 15, 1969 on CBS. It ran 26 seasons and had 655 episodes. It ended in December 1997. The show attracted numerous guest stars. Along with the five mentioned above, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Tanya Tucker, The Judds and Glenn Campbell were guests of the show.

Caring Hearts United is a nonprofit organization that provides smiles where they are needed most. Along with care packages to remind hospice patients that someone cares, the group assists hospice units in Warren County and surrounding areas by providing gas cards for medical appointments, hospital size bed sheets, and more.
