Those looking for a sweet summer treat will be in luck this Saturday at the Farmers Market annual Melon Day.

Melon Day is this Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Warren County Farmers Market located at 100 Market St.

This year, both slices of watermelon and slices of cantaloupe will be served. Everyone is encouraged to come out and enjoy a slice or two of your favorite melons.

Watermelon technically is not a fruit. It is considered a vegetable and is part of the Cucurbitaceous family which includes cucumbers, squash and pumpkins. Watermelons are also a great health food.

It can relieve inflammation that contributes to conditions such as asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer and arthritis. Watermelon also does not contain any fat or cholesterol, is high in fiber and vitamins A and C and is a good source of potassium. Watermelons are 92 percent water. They’re not only delicious and refreshing but they help you hydrate, too.

Cantaloupe is also good for you. It is a good source of vitamins A, C and K, fiber and potassium. Cantaloupes can also help reduce inflammation throughout the body. They are named after Cantalupo, Italy, where they were first cultivated in Europe.

The Warren County Farmers Market will also have a few more events coming up. Sept. 23 will be Customer Appreciation Day. On Oct. 7 there will be a chili cook-off. There will be a yard sale on Oct. 14. On Oct. 21 there will be a baked pie contest. Oct. 28 will be the 4-H pumpkin carving and decorating contest, trick-or-treat at the market and the Market Costume Contest.

The Farmers Market is currently open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
