The United Way of Highway 55 doled out donations on Friday with six local nonprofits receiving money.
The Highway 55 chapter is set to disperse $50,000 in donations this year in its three-county area which includes Warren, Coffee and Moore counties. Donations will be made in four quarterly installments to each nonprofit.
“All of our funding stays in the three-county area,” said United Way of Highway 55 executive director Ashley Abraham. “Warren County used to be in the same United Way district as Murfreesboro and I think Warren County kind of got lost.”
Abraham said there is an application process for nonprofits interested in obtaining funding through the United Way, which generates money through fundraisers and donations from businesses and private individuals. A board evaluates the applicants and determines funding recipients.
Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency is one of the six Warren County organizations to receive United Way funding. UCHRA director Carrie Baker said the United Way money would be used for hotel vouchers to place homeless individuals in rooms when needed.
Baker was also happy to note bus shelters are in place around McMinnville for people waiting on UCHRA transportation.
The six nonprofits were announced Friday during a ceremony at the Chamber of Commerce. Representatives from those organizations were also treated to a hotdog lunch.
