With the beginning of a new school year comes a host of extracurricular activities for students. After several years on hiatus, Warren County High School has resurrected its Young Democrats Club. No less than 41 students expressed interest in starting the club at the beginning of the year and, thanks to the sponsorship of Patricia Lewis and Alicia Rodriguez, the club had its inaugural meeting last Tuesday.
“Last year there was a Young Republican club, but not a Young Democrat Club. When there was at least 41 students interested in starting a Democratic club this year, it became obvious they needed a sponsor. That’s when I decided to step in and fill that need,” said Lewis.
Clocking in with 11 members, the group elected its officers last week. Those officers for the 2023-24 school year are Nick Reile, president; Ila Adcock, vice-president; Hannah Wood, secretary and Valerey Esparza, treasurer.
The group discussed potential projects and trips for the coming year. They would love to do a field trip to the State Capitol in Nashville and sit in on a live legislative session. Various projects were mentioned including organizing a closet to collect items for the homeless. A hoodie/jacket drive for the coming cold weather was discussed as was perhaps doing something around animal shelters and soup kitchens to raise funds.
Last year the high school had a Young Republican club but that sponsor left and nobody else picked it up. Back in 2018 Young Republicans and Democrats came together to have a debate. Due to COVID and all its ramifications, the organizations have been waning and reshuffling their membership.
Lewis spoke warmly of the Young Democrat Club and its members. “They were all in agreement this needs to be a positive representation. I am thankful for this group of young people. Some are my former students and I am especially happy to be working with them all.”
The high school club meets once a month.
